Delta Assembly Commences Six-Week Annual Recess, Targets Stronger Legislative Performance
Lawmakers Adjourn Until September After Motion at Plenary
THE Delta State House of Assembly has commenced its annual six-week legislative recess, with members scheduled to resume plenary on Tuesday 1st September 2026, following the conclusion of the break.
The recess was approved during Tuesday’s plenary after a motion moved by the Leader of the House, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, and seconded by Hon. Pereotu Oloye, representing Burutu II Constituency. The motion received unanimous support from members during the sitting presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor.
The annual recess forms part of the Assembly’s legislative calendar, providing lawmakers with an opportunity to undertake constituency engagements, participate in professional development programmes and prepare for the next legislative session.
Speaker Commends Lawmakers’ Commitment
Before declaring the House adjourned, Speaker Guwor applauded members for their dedication and commitment throughout the legislative session, describing their contributions as instrumental to the Assembly’s activities.
He encouraged legislators to maximise the recess period by participating in scheduled capacity-building and training programmes designed to strengthen legislative competence and improve policy formulation, oversight responsibilities and lawmaking.
According to the Speaker, continuous professional development remains essential to improving parliamentary performance and ensuring effective representation of constituents.
Lawmakers Encouraged to Deepen Constituency Engagement
Guwor also urged members to use the recess to reconnect with their constituents by gathering feedback on government programmes, development priorities and community concerns.
He said sustained interaction with the electorate would enable lawmakers to identify issues requiring legislative intervention when the House reconvenes.
The Speaker noted that constituency consultations remain a critical component of representative democracy, helping lawmakers align legislative priorities with the expectations of the people they serve.
Assembly Management, Media Receive Commendation
The Speaker further commended the management and staff of the Delta State House of Assembly for their professionalism and commitment to supporting legislative activities throughout the session.
He also praised members of the media for their responsible, balanced and consistent coverage of the Assembly’s proceedings, urging journalists to sustain their partnership in promoting transparency and informing the public about legislative developments.
Guwor equally acknowledged the support of stakeholders who contributed to the smooth conduct of legislative business before wishing lawmakers safe travels and a productive recess.
