NIGERIA’S boys’ team made a winning start to the 2026 CAVB U-18 African Nations Volleyball Championship after defeating Morocco in straight sets in their Group A opener in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Nigerian youngsters displayed discipline, resilience and attacking efficiency to record a 3-0 victory, taking the match 32-30, 25-21 and 25-18 to earn their first points of the tournament.
The opening set proved to be the toughest, with both sides matching each other point for point in a thrilling contest. However, Nigeria held their nerve in the closing stages to edge Morocco 32-30 and gain the early advantage.
Confidence Grows After First-Set Triumph
Buoyed by the hard-fought opening-set victory, Nigeria settled into their rhythm and began to dictate the pace of the match. They controlled key moments in the second set to secure a 25-21 win before producing an even more dominant display in the third set, closing out the encounter 25-18.
The comprehensive victory places Nigeria in a strong position in Group A, where they are also scheduled to face hosts Egypt and Burundi as they pursue qualification for the knockout rounds.
In the other pool, Group B comprises Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya, with the top-performing teams advancing to the next phase of the continental championship.
Nigeria will now turn attention to their remaining fixtures as they seek to build on an encouraging start and strengthen their challenge for the African title.
