Senate President Cup Kicks Off In Akwa Ibom With Super Eagles Talent Hunt

Ningi to Represent Senate President
SENATOR Abdul Ningi will represent Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio at the opening ceremony of the third Senate President Cup in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State.
Ningi, who chairs the Senate Committee on Sports Development, will attend the ceremony at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, according to tournament coordinator John Ekpenyong.
The announcement came from Ekpenyong, who also serves as National President of the Grassroots Sports Federation of Nigeria.
Over 500 Young Talents Expected
This year’s tournament promises greater competition and rewards, with more than 500 young footballers expected to showcase their abilities.
Moreover, National Under-17 coaches and international scouts will attend the competition to identify promising players for possible future development towards the Super Eagles.
Ekpenyong described the tournament as part of Akpabio’s longstanding commitment to grassroots football and youth empowerment. He recalled that the Senate President had promoted football for more than 15 years, beginning with his tenure as governor of Akwa Ibom State.
He also cited Akpabio’s sponsorship of the Niger Delta Peace Cup while serving as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
Dignitaries to Attend Grand Finale
Ekpenyong praised Akpabio for appointing Ningi as his representative despite his demanding national schedule. According to him, the decision reflects the Senate President’s continued support for grassroots sports.
Meanwhile, Prince Adeyinka Adeboye, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Grassroots Sports Development, will attend the opening ceremony.
Additionally, Barrister Seyi Tinubu will receive the Best Grassroots Sports Personality award at the grand finale on 1st November 2026.
The organisers expect the tournament to provide emerging footballers with a valuable platform to display their skills and attract the attention of coaches and international scouts.
