Delta Moves Against Football Violence, Places ₦200,000 Bounty On Officials’ Attacker
THE Delta State Sports Commission has announced a ₦200,000 reward for anyone who provides credible information that leads to the arrest of a suspect accused of attacking match officials after the NPFL encounter between Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars.
The attack reportedly took place on Sunday outside the Southern Delta University Stadium in Ozoro, following a match that ended in a draw.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Henry Ukah, the commission expressed deep concern over the incident. It explained that security personnel had already escorted the officials out of the stadium when the assault occurred.
Despite that escort, the officials were attacked while standing at their bus outside the venue.
Reacting to the incident, commission chairman Onoriode Oborevwori said the reward was intended to help identify the suspect and secure an immediate arrest.
He also reiterated the commission’s firm opposition to hooliganism and violence in football. According to him, protecting match officials and preserving order at sporting events must remain priorities.
Furthermore, Oborevwori appealed to members of the public to assist the investigation by sharing credible information with the police.
He directed anyone with relevant details to contact the Ughelli Area Command Police, where the case has been lodged.
The commission’s response underscores the need to address attacks on match officials and ensure that football fixtures take place in a safe environment. Authorities will now rely on information from the public to help identify the suspect and advance the investigation.
