Senegal’s President Faye Elected Chairman of ECOWAS Authority
Leadership Changes Hands at Regional Summit in Sierra Leone
SENEGALESE President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
His election was announced during the 69th Ordinary Session of the regional bloc held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, where West African leaders gathered to deliberate on pressing political, economic and security issues confronting the region.
Faye succeeds Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, who completed his tenure as chairman of the 15-member organisation.
New Chairman Inherits Major Regional Challenges
Faye assumes office at a critical period for ECOWAS, with the regional body facing multiple challenges, including worsening terrorism, political instability, democratic setbacks and strained relations with Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, which have withdrawn from the bloc.
Regional leaders are also seeking stronger cooperation to address insecurity, promote constitutional governance and revive economic integration across West Africa.
The new chairman is expected to play a central role in driving dialogue and rebuilding confidence among member states as ECOWAS navigates one of the most challenging periods in its history.
Commitment to Peace and Economic Integration
In his acceptance speech, President Faye pledged to strengthen regional cooperation, promote peace and security, deepen economic integration and uphold democratic governance across West Africa.
He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing ECOWAS’ founding objectives by encouraging closer collaboration among member states while pursuing policies that support regional stability and sustainable economic growth.
At 46 years old, Faye becomes one of the youngest leaders ever to chair the organisation, placing Senegal at the forefront of regional diplomacy during a period of significant geopolitical change.
