Crossfire At Danare: Inside The Nigeria–Cameroon Border Military Standoff

Military Incursion and Immediate Response
THE Nigerian Army has confirmed the incursion of Cameroonian troops into Danare community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State, describing the incident as a breach that was swiftly contained through operational and diplomatic coordination.
According to the 82 Division Public Relations office, the incident occurred on 9 June 2026, when foreign soldiers were sighted within Nigerian territory. Troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Danare were immediately mobilised to the scene.
Military authorities said contact was quickly established with Cameroonian counterparts to de-escalate the situation and prevent further escalation along the sensitive border corridor.
Community Reaction and On-Ground Tension
Residents of Danare reportedly confronted the armed personnel, insisting they had no jurisdictional authority within Nigerian territory. Eyewitness accounts suggested tense exchanges, including warnings issued by the Cameroonian soldiers against being filmed.
Despite the confrontation, no casualties were recorded, though the incident triggered anxiety among residents in the border community.
Underlying Border Dispute Revealed
Preliminary military findings suggest the incursion may be linked to disputes over levies collected on farmland straddling Danare (Nigeria) and Dadi (Cameroon).
Security analysts note that such economic and land-use disagreements have historically contributed to friction along poorly demarcated sections of the Nigeria–Cameroon border.
Diplomatic De-escalation and Withdrawal
Following engagements between both militaries, Cameroonian troops reportedly withdrew from Danare in line with existing border protocols.
As a preventive measure, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division directed further diplomatic-military dialogue between the Commander of 13 Brigade and his Cameroonian counterpart.
Officials say the move is aimed at reinforcing border coordination mechanisms and preventing recurrence.
Political Condemnation and Sovereignty Concerns
Lawmakers have since condemned the incident, describing it as an unacceptable violation of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
Victor Abang, representing Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency, warned that repeated incursions could destabilise fragile border communities and strain long-standing bilateral relations.
He urged urgent federal diplomatic intervention to address recurring boundary tensions and protect vulnerable settlements along the border corridor.
