Asaba Specialist Hospital Sets National Pace With Advanced MRI Technology

ASABA Specialist Hospital has begun Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services with the installation of Nigeria’s first helium-free MRI scanner, marking a major milestone in the country’s healthcare sector.
The hospital deployed a Siemens 1.5 Tesla helium-free MRI machine. The facility said the technology would improve diagnostic services and expand access to advanced medical imaging for patients across Delta State and beyond.
Chief Medical Director, Dr. Peace Ighosewe, announced the development in a statement. She described the new scanner as a significant investment that would strengthen specialist healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes.
She commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for supporting the acquisition of the equipment. She said the investment reflects the administration’s commitment to modernising healthcare and making quality medical services more accessible.
To mark the launch, the hospital offered free MRI scans to patients for two days. The exercise ended on Friday and benefited more than 10 patients.
Dr. Ighosewe said the new scanner would reduce the need for patients to travel outside Delta State for MRI examinations. She added that quicker access to diagnostic imaging would support faster diagnosis, improve treatment decisions and enhance clinical care.
She explained that the Siemens 1.5 Tesla helium-free MRI system represents one of the latest advances in diagnostic imaging technology. According to her, the equipment will strengthen the hospital’s capacity to manage complex medical cases with greater accuracy.
The hospital also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering patient-centred healthcare through continuous investment in modern technology and skilled medical professionals.
Dr. Ighosewe said the new MRI service aligns with Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda, which places strong emphasis on improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality medical services across Delta State.
