NEC Approves 112 Emergency Line To Boost Rapid Response Across Nigeria
NEC Ratifies Unified Emergency Number
THE National Economic Council (NEC) has approved the adoption of 112 as Nigeria’s unified national emergency number across all levels of government and relevant agencies.
The decision was taken at the council’s 157th meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, as part of efforts to strengthen coordination and response to emergencies nationwide.
Push for Faster Emergency Response
Shettima said the initiative is aimed at eliminating delays caused by bureaucracy during emergencies, stressing that citizens require immediate and effective response systems in critical situations.
He noted that whether faced with accidents, insecurity, or natural disasters, Nigerians need a single, reliable number and a coordinated system capable of saving lives promptly.
Implementation Framework Approved
NEC also approved the creation of a multi-agency implementation committee to oversee the rollout of the emergency number.
The committee will be led by the Office of the Vice President in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), ensuring proper coordination, public awareness, and institutional ownership of the system.
Beyond Policy to Practical Impact
The vice president emphasised that the initiative goes beyond technical reform, describing it as a measure of government responsiveness and commitment to citizens’ welfare.
He urged stakeholders to focus on policies that deliver tangible benefits, stressing the need for coordinated action among federal and state governments.
Other Key Decisions by NEC
The council also reviewed ongoing efforts to rehabilitate police training institutions nationwide, commending a committee led by Peter Mbah for progress made so far.
Additionally, NEC assessed national financial accounts, including the Excess Crude Account and other fiscal buffers, highlighting the importance of prudent resource management.
