Vacant Legislative Seats: INEC Fixes Date For Fresh Polls Across Nigeria

Fresh Elections to Fill Vacant Seats
THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed 20th June 2026 for the conduct of by-elections to fill vacant legislative positions in six states.
The decision was announced as part of preparations for upcoming electoral activities nationwide.
Combined Polls for Efficiency
INEC disclosed that the by-elections would be held on the same day as the Ekiti State governorship election, a move aimed at reducing costs and enhancing operational efficiency.
The commission said the approach would also ensure better deployment of personnel and resources.
Breakdown of Affected Constituencies
The elections will include senatorial contests in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, and Ondo states, alongside legislative elections in Kebbi and Kano states.
These positions became vacant due to various circumstances, necessitating fresh polls to fill them.
Commitment to Credible Elections

The commission also urged political parties and voters to actively participate in the process to strengthen democratic governance.
