THE Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to clarify the status of its investigation into former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa.

The group gave the commission seven working days to provide an update or initiate visible prosecution proceedings.

According to HURIWA, the absence of communication on the case has heightened public concern and speculation, particularly given the scale of allegations reportedly linked to public funds.

The organisation stressed that while allegations do not equate to guilt, lack of transparency in high-profile cases weakens public confidence in anti-corruption institutions.

The group pointed to similar cases involving prominent political figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, where investigations have not led to clearly communicated outcomes.

It warned that such patterns could reinforce perceptions of selective justice.

HURIWA questioned whether Nigeria risks normalising a system where corruption allegations lose traction following political realignments.

The group insisted that the credibility of the anti-corruption fight depends on consistent enforcement, regardless of political affiliations.

To address these concerns, HURIWA advocated policy reforms, including mandatory clearance certification for political aspirants and improved public disclosure of ongoing investigations.
