Mass Terrorism Trial Begins As 400 Suspects Face Federal High Court In Abuja

Mass arraignment begins in Abuja court complex
THE Nigerian government on Monday commenced the arraignment of over 400 individuals accused of terrorism-related offences before judges of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The suspects are being processed in multiple batches, with simultaneous hearings taking place across several courtrooms within the court complex. As a result, routine court activities were temporarily suspended to accommodate the large-scale proceedings.
Heavy security presence around court premises
Security was significantly tightened around the Federal High Court. Soldiers restricted access roads leading to the complex and deployed military vehicles at strategic points, reflecting the sensitivity of the trial.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, led the prosecution team, supported by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo—both Senior Advocates of Nigeria.
Legal representation and charges
The suspects face multiple charges, including terrorism, terrorism financing, and aiding insurgent activities. The Legal Aid Council of Nigeria is providing legal representation for indigent defendants to ensure fair trial coverage.
The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, had earlier assigned judges specifically for the special hearing sessions.
Follow-up on earlier mass convictions
This mass arraignment follows a similar exercise conducted in April, during which the Federal Government announced the conviction of 386 terrorism suspects.
