Logistics, Security Challenges Trigger Exam Delays In Some Centres — WAEC

WAEC Issues Official Clarification
THE West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained the reasons behind the delayed conduct of Mathematics and Agricultural Science papers in some centres during the ongoing 2026 WASSCE for school candidates.
The Council said it received reports of delays and immediately launched investigations to determine the causes and prevent a recurrence.
Accident and Security Issues Disrupt Logistics
According to WAEC, the disruption was caused by a combination of logistical and operational challenges, including a fatal motor accident on 3 June 2026, which claimed the lives of three staff members transporting examination materials.
The incident significantly affected the distribution of sensitive examination materials across affected regions.
Other Contributing Factors Identified
WAEC also cited prevailing regional security challenges, late registration of candidates, and delays in finalizing examination modalities as contributing factors.
It added that protests linked to the abduction of schoolchildren in some areas further disrupted the timely movement of materials.
Emergency Measures Activated
Despite the setbacks, WAEC said its staff implemented emergency contingency plans to ensure that examinations proceeded in affected centres.
The Council confirmed that the remaining papers had since been conducted without further disruptions.
Assurance to Stakeholders
WAEC assured candidates, parents, and education stakeholders that measures have been put in place to prevent a recurrence.
It reaffirmed its collaboration with security agencies and education authorities to safeguard the integrity and smooth conduct of the ongoing examination.
