2027: Governorship, Assembly Campaigns Begin as Parties Race to Activate Structures

PUBLIC campaigns for the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections officially begin today, 8 September, in line with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The development opens another phase of political activity ahead of the general elections.

28 States Enter Campaign Season

Candidates seeking governorship seats in 28 states can now take their campaigns directly to voters.

They can also use rallies, town-hall meetings, media engagements and other lawful platforms to present their programmes and seek public support.

The same campaign window applies to candidates contesting seats in the various State Houses of Assembly across the participating states.

INEC had earlier opened campaigns for presidential and National Assembly candidates on August 19.

Major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and African Democratic Congress (ADC), have fielded governorship candidates in the 28 states where the elections will take place.

Parties Face Organisational Delays

However, the formal opening of the campaign season comes as several political parties continue to face organisational challenges.

Nearly three weeks after national campaign activities began, some major parties are yet to fully establish or activate their campaign structures.

The APC recently announced its national campaign council but has yet to inaugurate the body.

Sources within the party attributed the delay to complaints over the inclusion of some controversial figures in the council.

Party leaders are reportedly reviewing the membership list and may expand or adjust its composition before the inauguration.

Opposition Parties Also Yet to Fully Mobilise

The situation is not limited to the ruling party.

The NDC, ADC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are also yet to inaugurate some of their central and state-level campaign structures.

Political analysts have linked the delays to unresolved disputes from party primaries, funding challenges and negotiations over possible alliances ahead of the elections.

With the 150-day campaign period now open for the state-level contests, parties face pressure to put their structures in place and begin sustained grassroots mobilisation.

Eight States Excluded From the Poll

The governorship and State Assembly elections will not hold in eight states as part of the 2027 general election cycle.

They are Imo, Ondo, Osun, Bayelsa, Edo, Kogi, Ekiti and Anambra.

Their election calendars differ from the general electoral timetable because of the timing of their respective election cycles.

For the 28 participating states, however, the campaign period now marks the beginning of a more intense contest for voters, political influence and control of state governments and legislatures.
