Labour Party Picks Esther James As Delta Governorship Flagbearer For 2027

Labour Party Produces Female Governorship Candidate in Delta
THE Labour Party (LP) has produced another female governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 general election in Delta State, with Mrs. Esther James emerging as the party’s standard-bearer following its governorship primary election.
James, an indigene of Igbide in Isoko South Local Government Area, was elected by consensus after emerging as the sole aspirant for the party’s governorship ticket. The exercise also produced Mr. Rex Biose as the party’s senatorial candidate for Delta North.
Her emergence places Labour Party among the early political platforms already positioning for the 2027 governorship race in Delta State, a contest expected to attract candidates from major political parties across the state’s three senatorial districts.
Candidate Expresses Confidence Ahead of Tough Contest
In her acceptance speech, Esther James described her emergence as a significant milestone, expressing gratitude to God and party members for the confidence reposed in her leadership aspirations.
She acknowledged that the road to Government House, Asaba, would be challenging, particularly against rivals backed by stronger political structures and substantial financial resources. Nevertheless, she maintained that determination, grassroots support, and public trust would remain key factors in her campaign.
According to her, the Labour Party remains a viable alternative for Delta voters and is determined to improve on its performance in the 2023 elections.
James pledged to run an inclusive campaign focused on governance, accountability, and development, while appealing to party supporters to remain united ahead of the election season.
Delta North Candidate Promises Grassroots Representation
Also speaking after his emergence, Delta North senatorial candidate Rex Biose said extensive consultations had preceded the primary process.
Biose stated that his ambition was rooted in the desire to address developmental gaps across communities in the senatorial district. He promised to champion policies aimed at improving access to infrastructure and social amenities if elected.
According to him, effective representation requires close engagement with constituents and a practical understanding of local challenges.
Party Leadership Hails Peaceful Primary
Chairman of the Primary Election Committee, Mallam Hamisu Santutaki, described the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and orderly.
He noted that the turnout of party members reflected continued confidence in the Labour Party, adding that the momentum generated during the 2023 election cycle remains evident within the party structure.
Santutaki further disclosed that the exercise was monitored by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and civil society organisations.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of 2027, Labour Party leaders say the emergence of their candidates marks the beginning of efforts to strengthen the party’s presence across Delta State and position it as a competitive force in the next electoral cycle.
