Beyond the Airport: How 2Africa Cable Could Reshape Akwa Ibom’s Digital Economy
THE commissioning of high-speed internet infrastructure at Victor Attah International Airport marks an important development in Akwa Ibom State’s digital ambitions.
But the significance of the project extends beyond the airport terminal.
The 2Africa submarine cable did not land at the airport. It landed at Qua Iboe in Ibeno Local Government Area.
The airport connection comes through terrestrial fibre infrastructure that carries capacity from the cable landing point to the airport.
That distinction matters because the real economic value of the project will depend on what happens after the connection reaches the airport.
From subsea infrastructure to local connectivity
2Africa is one of the world’s longest subsea cable systems.
The network stretches about 45,000 kilometres around Africa and connects Africa, Europe and the Middle East through 46 landing points across 33 countries.
Its design capacity of up to 180 terabits per second places it among the major international digital infrastructure projects serving the continent.
The simplest way to understand the system is to imagine a large reservoir.
The submarine cable provides the reservoir of international internet capacity.
Terrestrial fibre networks act as the pipes carrying that capacity inland.
The new fibre connection at the airport is one of those strategic pipes.
Its importance therefore lies not simply in providing faster internet to passengers and airport officials, but in demonstrating how international connectivity can be distributed across the state.
Why the airport connection matters
Modern airports increasingly depend on reliable digital networks.
Airlines use connectivity for passenger check-in, ticket validation, flight information, passenger notifications and communication.
Airport authorities rely on networks for administration, CCTV surveillance, access control, security monitoring and emergency coordination.
A reliable fibre connection can also improve the passenger experience.
Travellers can make digital payments, contact relatives, arrange transportation, book hotels, access maps and continue business activities without depending on unreliable connections.
Cargo operators can benefit as well.
Digital documentation, shipment tracking and real-time communication can improve logistics and reduce delays.
For an airport seeking a stronger international profile, such infrastructure also sends a message to investors and visitors.
It suggests that Akwa Ibom is building an environment capable of supporting tourism, commerce and international business.
The bigger opportunity lies outside the airport
The most important question, however, is what happens to the capacity beyond the airport.
A cable landing station alone does not transform an economy.
Internet service providers must take advantage of the available backbone infrastructure and extend broadband to homes, businesses, schools, hospitals and public institutions.
Raphael Onyinye Odili, Chief Executive Officer of Connect, Surf and Smile Limited, previously explained that CSS Fiber became the first Internet Service Provider to leverage MainOne’s fibre infrastructure to provide high-speed internet services across Uyo.
That development illustrates the potential of linking international cable capacity with local broadband networks.
The closer international capacity gets to consumers, the greater the opportunity for service providers to expand reliable connectivity.
Competition could make broadband more affordable
The impact is already becoming visible in parts of Uyo.
In Ewet Housing Extension, CSS Fiber offers about 29 Mbps for ₦26,000 monthly.
Starlink, by comparison, offers about 63 Mbps for ₦57,000 monthly.
Starlink provides higher advertised speed in this comparison, but the CSS Fiber package costs ₦31,000 less each month.
For households and small businesses whose requirements fall within that capacity, local fibre can provide a more affordable option.
Greater availability of competing broadband services could also encourage providers to improve quality and pricing.
That competition is crucial in a state where the cost of connectivity remains a barrier for many households and businesses.
Digital infrastructure can unlock new economic activity
Affordable broadband has consequences far beyond social media.
Students can attend online classes, access research materials and participate in digital training.
Hospitals can expand telemedicine and remote consultation services.
Small businesses can accept digital payments, manage inventory, use cloud accounting and reach customers online.
Hotels, restaurants and tourism operators can improve reservations, customer communication and digital marketing.
Young people can access remote employment, freelancing, software development, cybersecurity, digital media and e-commerce.
Government agencies can also strengthen digital records, online services, virtual meetings and communication between ministries and departments.
In that sense, broadband infrastructure can become an economic asset rather than simply a telecommunications facility.
Rural communities must not be left behind
There is, however, a major risk.
The benefits of the 2Africa cable may remain concentrated around urban centres if providers fail to invest in last-mile connectivity.
A cable landing point does not automatically translate into affordable broadband in every home.
Internet providers still have to build fibre networks, towers and fixed wireless systems.
They also need reliable power, maintenance capacity and commercially sustainable pricing.
Government can help by supporting infrastructure expansion to strategic locations.
Where fibre-to-the-home is not immediately viable, fixed wireless networks, mobile infrastructure and community digital hubs could extend access.
The objective should be to prevent a digital divide between Uyo and communities elsewhere in the state.
Security must accompany connectivity
The expansion of digital infrastructure also creates cybersecurity responsibilities.
At the airport, public internet access should remain separate from critical operational systems.
Passenger information, CCTV networks, access-control systems and aviation operations require stronger protection.
Backup power and alternative fibre routes are equally important.
A network that fails during a major operational incident can become a security and economic vulnerability.
Turning capacity into development
Akwa Ibom now has an opportunity to move from simply hosting digital infrastructure to building an ecosystem around it.
The 2Africa cable provides international connectivity.
Terrestrial fibre can distribute that capacity.
Internet service providers can take it to businesses and households.
Government can create an enabling regulatory and investment environment.
Educational institutions can use the infrastructure to expand digital learning.
Entrepreneurs can turn connectivity into businesses and employment.
The ultimate measure of success should therefore not be how fast the internet connection at the airport becomes.
It should be how many businesses, schools, hospitals, public institutions and households eventually benefit from the infrastructure.
The cable gives Akwa Ibom a digital gateway to the world.
The real challenge now is to make sure that gateway does not stop at the airport.
