Oborevwori Charges New 6 Division GOC To Sustain Security Collaboration In Delta

DELTA State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged the new General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Major General Everest Okoro, to strengthen security collaboration across the Niger Delta.
Oborevwori made the call on Tuesday when Okoro visited the Government House in Asaba.
Okoro also serves as Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe.
The governor congratulated him on his appointment and described 6 Division as a strategic military formation.
He said the division has a major responsibility for maintaining peace across the region.
Oborevwori assured Okoro of the Delta Government’s continued cooperation with the military and other security agencies.
He attributed the relative peace in Delta to sustained cooperation between the government and security agencies.
The governor also linked the state’s security directly to Nigeria’s economic stability.
“Delta State is very, very key to the economy of Nigeria,” he said.
He noted that the state hosts major oil and gas assets and other infrastructure critical to the national economy.
Oborevwori commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their efforts to protect lives, property and economic assets.
He said his administration had continued to provide infrastructure and logistics to improve security operations.
The governor disclosed that the state recently constructed one-unit flats at the Amphibious Army Barracks in Agbor.
He also said the government had maintained logistical support for the 63 Brigade.
Oborevwori pledged to sustain the partnership with the Army.
He stressed that security remains a foundation for economic growth.
“If this region is safe, the economy will go up. If there is unrest in this region, the economy will go down,” he said.
The governor therefore urged Okoro to adopt proactive measures against criminal elements and emerging security threats.
He also recalled his previous involvement with the Presidential Amnesty Programme and his longstanding relationship with security agencies in the Niger Delta.
Okoro, who visited as part of his familiarisation tour, thanked the governor for what he described as purposeful leadership.
The Army commander praised the Delta Government’s support for security operations, particularly its interventions in infrastructure, welfare and development.
He described Delta as strategically important because of its oil and gas facilities, waterways and other critical national assets.
Protecting those assets, he said, would remain one of his priorities.
Okoro identified credible intelligence, realistic training and effective coordination among security agencies as essential to defeating security threats.
He said his command would focus on protecting critical national assets, countering threats and executing assigned missions through disciplined leadership and joint operations.
The GOC also commended the cordial relationship between the Delta Government and the Nigerian Army.
He particularly highlighted the partnership with the 63 Brigade and urged all parties to sustain it.
