Government Expands International Access for Nigerian Carrier
THE Federal Government has approved several international routes for United Nigeria Airlines, paving the way for the airline to expand its operations beyond Africa and compete more aggressively in the global aviation market.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced that the airline has been cleared to operate key destinations including New York, Canada and Dubai. The approvals were unveiled during the presentation of two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft in Lagos.
According to the minister, the route allocations form part of a broader policy aimed at strengthening indigenous airlines and increasing their participation in international passenger traffic.
Reducing Foreign Dominance in Air Travel
Keyamo expressed concern that foreign airlines currently control the overwhelming majority of passengers travelling from Nigeria to destinations around the world.
He noted that bilateral air service agreements grant Nigerian carriers reciprocal rights to operate many international routes and argued that local airlines should take advantage of these opportunities rather than allowing foreign operators to dominate the market.
The minister said government policy is focused on helping Nigerian airlines capture a larger share of international travel while building stronger and more competitive aviation businesses.
Aircraft Financing and Industry Reforms
To support the expansion plans of domestic airlines, Keyamo disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the establishment of a Nigerian aircraft leasing company designed to ease access to aircraft acquisition financing.
He explained that the initiative would provide airlines with stronger negotiating power and government-backed support when seeking to expand their fleets.
The minister also reflected on reforms implemented over the last two and a half years, saying government engagement with operators had helped address longstanding industry concerns and laid the foundation for growth.
New Aircraft Signal Growth Ambitions
Industry stakeholders described the arrival of the two Boeing aircraft as a major milestone for United Nigeria Airlines and Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Representatives of Boeing highlighted ongoing partnerships to train Nigerian pilots and engineers while improving operational standards across the industry.
The airline’s expansion is expected to enhance connectivity, create jobs, support tourism and commerce, and position United Nigeria Airlines for a stronger presence in international aviation markets.
