A controversy has emerged following the release of a film featuring late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, with a media aide to Delta State Governor questioning the timing of the project.
Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Ovie, criticised actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli over her decision to premiere the movie The First Lady shortly after Ekubo’s burial.
In a social media post, Ovie argued that the release came too soon after the actor’s funeral and risked shifting public attention from mourning and remembrance to film promotion.
Questions Over Timing
According to Ovie, while Oboli’s decision to dedicate proceeds from the film to the late actor’s family may have been well-intentioned, it did not remove concerns about the promotional value attached to the release.
He maintained that grief should not be used as a marketing opportunity and stressed that Ekubo’s life and contributions to the entertainment industry should remain the central focus.
The aide suggested that announcing the film immediately after the burial created the impression that public emotions were being leveraged to generate attention for the production.
Oboli Explains Decision
Oboli had earlier announced the release of The First Lady on her YouTube platform, describing the project as a special part of her long-standing friendship with Ekubo.
She explained that the movie was one of the earliest projects they worked on together and said all proceeds generated from the release would be directed to the actor’s family.
The filmmaker urged fans and supporters to watch and share the film as a way of honouring his memory and celebrating his legacy.
