FG Orders Strict ‘No Work, No Pay’ Enforcement As ASUU Strike Begins
By MELVIN KOFFA
THE Federal Government has directed Vice-Chancellors of all federal universities to enforce the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy against lecturers participating in the two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
In a letter issued Monday, Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, instructed VCs to conduct roll calls, submit attendance reports, and withhold salaries of lecturers who fail to report for duty. He said the directive aligns with Nigeria’s labour laws and exempts members of CONUA and NAMDA, who are not part of the strike.
Mr. Alausa had earlier accused ASUU of failing to negotiate in good faith. However, ASUU insists the government has not met its demands, including the conclusion of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, release of withheld salaries, revitalisation of universities, and payment of arrears and deductions.
The union’s president, Chris Piwuna, said last week’s meeting with the government produced no meaningful outcome, prompting the continuation of the strike.
