Delta Mourns Loss of Two NULGE Leaders in Fatal Road Accident
Labour Movement Thrown Into Mourning
THE Delta State labour community has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of two senior leaders of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrades Emmanuel Nwanma and Nnamdi Memeh, in a fatal road accident.
The deceased were serving as Chairmen of NULGE in Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas respectively before they lost their lives in the crash, which occurred on Monday 21 July 2026.
Although authorities have confirmed the incident, the exact circumstances surrounding the accident remain unclear, with investigations expected to determine its cause.
Council Chairmen Pay Tribute
Reacting to the tragedy, Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Area, Hon. Hunkamma Monday Odigwe, described the death of Comrade Nnamdi Memeh as a devastating loss to the council and the local government workforce.
Odigwe recalled that upon assuming office two years ago, he found in the late union leader a dedicated advocate for workers’ welfare whose guiding principle was “The Workers First.”
He said the council had developed a productive working relationship with the late labour leader and expressed sadness that his contributions to staff welfare and industrial harmony had been cut short.
The council chairman prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul while extending condolences to his family, colleagues and members of the labour movement.
Ika South Council Describes Nwanma as Selfless Leader
Similarly, Chairman of Ika South Local Government Area, Hon. Jerry Ehiwarior, expressed deep sorrow over the death of Comrade Emmanuel Nwanma.
In a condolence message issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Jonathan Onwuka, Ehiwarior described the late NULGE chairman as a committed labour leader whose passion for workers’ welfare earned him widespread admiration.
He noted that Nwanma distinguished himself through calm leadership, integrity and an unwavering commitment to dialogue, peace and industrial stability.
According to the council chairman, the deceased consistently placed the interests of workers above personal considerations, making him a dependable partner in advancing harmonious labour-management relations.
Calls for Strength Amid Grief
Ehiwarior said the deaths of the two labour leaders represented a painful loss not only to their respective councils but also to the wider labour movement in Delta State.
He extended heartfelt condolences to their families, members of NULGE, council staff, friends and associates, praying that God would grant the departed eternal rest and comfort all those affected by the tragedy.
The deaths have left colleagues, workers and community members mourning the loss of two respected union leaders whose service and advocacy for local government employees earned them lasting recognition.
