Asagba Pledges Stronger Support For FRSC As Delta Intensifies Road Safety Campaign
Traditional ruler assures continued advocacy against reckless driving as FRSC calls for greater community participation in reducing road crashes.
FRSC Strengthens Partnership with Traditional Institution on Road Safety
THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Delta State Sector Command, has sought the support of the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge, in strengthening public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing road crashes and promoting safer driving practices across the state.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by the Delta State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Charles E. Eden, and members of the command to the Asagba’s Palace in Asaba.
Receiving the delegation, the monarch reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the FRSC’s mandate of ensuring safer highways and protecting road users.
Monarch Commends FRSC’s Performance
Asagba Azinge commended the Corps Commander and officers of the Delta State Command for their dedication to road safety, particularly their efforts in managing traffic and reducing accidents along the busy Asaba-Benin highway despite ongoing road construction.
He observed that road crashes within the kingdom had declined in recent times and attributed the improvement to the commitment of FRSC personnel and other stakeholders.
Describing public service as a noble responsibility, the monarch encouraged officers of the Corps to remain committed to saving lives through consistent enforcement and public enlightenment.
Concerns Raised Over Dangerous Driving Habits
The traditional ruler identified several persistent factors contributing to road accidents, including poor road conditions, vehicle overloading, reckless driving, excessive speeding and the use of unroadworthy vehicles.
He also expressed concern over motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and illicit drugs, asking whether routine alcohol and drug tests were still being conducted to detect impaired drivers.
According to him, tackling these issues requires sustained enforcement alongside continuous public education.
Royal Support for Nationwide Advocacy
Asagba Azinge assured the FRSC that he would continue to champion road safety awareness in his dual capacity as the traditional ruler of Asaba Kingdom and a Special Marshal of the Corps.
He emphasised that his commitment stemmed not only from his honorary role within the FRSC but also from his responsibility to safeguard the welfare of his subjects.
During the visit, the monarch received an advocacy script prepared by the Corps to support public enlightenment activities and offered prayers for the success of the Delta State Command.
FRSC Calls for Traditional Leadership
Earlier, Corps Commander Eden thanked the monarch for the warm reception and formally introduced himself following his recent appointment as Sector Commander for Delta State.
He described Asaba as a city rich in culture and tradition and stressed that road safety requires collective responsibility from both government institutions and community leaders.
The Sector Commander disclosed that the FRSC headquarters had directed traditional rulers nationwide to lead public campaigns against distracted driving, overloading, speeding and other dangerous road practices because of their influence within their communities.
In recognition of the monarch’s contributions as a Special Marshal, the Corps presented him with an award of appreciation before the visit concluded with a group photograph.
