Subscribers To Get Airtime Compensation For Bad Service, NCC Says

NCC Introduces Compensation for Network Failures
THE Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed telecommunications operators to compensate subscribers affected by poor network quality through airtime credits under a stricter enforcement framework.
The commission said the move is aimed at improving service delivery, protecting consumers and holding operators accountable for recurring lapses in network performance across the country.
Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, announced the measure during a media breakfast meeting on Thursday.
Credits to Cover Verified Service Lapses
According to Maida, the compensation applies to verified cases where operators failed to meet minimum quality-of-service standards in several locations.
He explained that the initiative is not a refund from the regulator but an obligation telecom providers must fulfil directly.
The compensation is expected to cover service failures recorded between November 2025 and January 2026 across multiple networks.
Subscribers to Receive Notifications
Eligible customers will receive airtime credits along with notifications explaining the reason for the compensation and the value credited to their accounts.
The NCC said this would improve transparency and help users understand when operators fall short of required standards.
The regulator added that independent checks would be carried out to ensure affected subscribers are properly compensated.
Tougher Sanctions Ahead
Maida warned that operators who fail to comply with the directive could face stricter enforcement measures.
He said sustained infrastructure investment and stronger operational discipline are necessary to improve network quality nationwide, including in underserved rural communities.
The NCC reiterated its commitment to ensuring Nigerians receive value for money spent on telecom services.
