Civil Defence Officer Killed In Hit-&-Run In Calabar

Tragic Incident Near Government Area
A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officer has died after being knocked down in a hit-and-run incident near the Cross River State Secretariat in Calabar.
The officer, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was reportedly struck by a speeding vehicle while on duty in the area, before the driver fled the scene.
The incident occurred in a busy government district, raising renewed concerns about road safety and reckless driving in urban centres.
Emergency Response and Death Confirmation
Eyewitnesses said the officer was found critically injured on the roadside shortly after the collision. He was rushed to a nearby medical facility, but was later confirmed dead due to the severity of his injuries.
Security personnel reportedly arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to secure the area and begin preliminary investigations.
Driver Fled the Scene
Authorities confirmed that the driver involved did not stop after the impact, leaving the victim unattended.
Efforts are currently underway to identify and track down the vehicle responsible, with law enforcement agencies reviewing available evidence and possible surveillance footage from the area.
Calls for Safer Roads
The incident has sparked fresh concern among residents and civil servants who frequent the area, as the Cross River State Secretariat is a high-traffic zone with both government workers and civilians moving in and out daily.
Road safety advocates say hit-and-run cases remain a growing problem in many Nigerian cities, often worsened by speeding, weak enforcement, and poor driver discipline.
Investigation Underway
The NSCDC and relevant security agencies are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death, while also intensifying efforts to apprehend the fleeing driver.
Officials say justice will be pursued once the suspect is identified.
