Inside Zamfara Peace Meeting Ambush: How 39 Elders Were Seized By Bandits Mid-Negotiation

A Peace Mission That Ended in Captivity
WHAT began as a reconciliation effort between elders of Magamin Diddi community and a notorious bandit leader ended in mass abduction, with 39 elders reportedly taken hostage during the meeting in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The elders had reportedly entered Muntsira Forest in an attempt to negotiate peace following recent violent clashes between local vigilantes and bandit groups in the area.
How a Negotiation Collapsed Into Violence
According to multiple accounts, tensions escalated after earlier confrontations between vigilantes and bandits led to deaths on both sides and the seizure of weapons.
In response, the bandit group allegedly demanded compensation and ransom payments, setting the stage for what was initially intended as a peace dialogue.
However, the situation deteriorated when the bandit leader reportedly stormed the meeting and ordered the detention of participants.
Hostages Split, Ransom Demanded
Reports indicate that out of about 50 participants initially held, 11 were released to deliver ransom demands of ₦100 million and relay conditions for the release of the remaining 39 captives.
Community sources say the elders included local leaders and political representatives engaged in the peace attempt.
Authorities Say Meeting Was Unauthorized
Local government officials confirmed the incident but stated that the delegation entered the forest without official clearance.
The council chairman noted that state policy discourages direct negotiation with armed groups, stressing that security agencies were not informed before the meeting took place.
Police Launch Rescue Operation
The Zamfara State Police Command confirmed the abduction and said tactical units had been deployed to track the victims.
Authorities say intelligence-based operations are ongoing to locate the captives and ensure their safe rescue, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the failed peace effort.
