Team Nigeria Impresses as Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games Begin
TEAM Nigeria was among the standout delegations at the colourful Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with the country’s striking green-and-white ceremonial outfits drawing widespread admiration during the Parade of Nations.
The Games officially got underway on Thursday at the OVO Hydro Arena with a spectacular ceremony celebrating Scotland’s rich heritage, cultural diversity and innovation, while formally launching the multi-sport event.
Nigeria’s delegation received warm applause from spectators as athletes proudly marched into the arena dressed in attire inspired by the nation’s colours, earning praise as one of the best-dressed teams at the ceremony.
A total of 74 Commonwealth Games Associations participated in the Parade of Nations, which made history by featuring Para and non-Para athletes entering together for the first time at a Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, reinforcing the event’s commitment to inclusion and equality.
The ceremony blended music, dance, digital storytelling and artistic performances that celebrated Glasgow’s industrial history and its status as a UNESCO City of Music. Participating nations also presented the King’s Baton in a colourful display highlighting unity, diversity and friendship across the Commonwealth.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla made a memorable entrance inspired by the iconic television series Doctor Who before the monarch officially declared the 23rd Commonwealth Games open.
In his address, King Charles welcomed athletes and officials to Scotland and encouraged competitors to pursue excellence while embracing the values of friendship, respect and unity that define the Commonwealth Games.
With the opening festivities concluded, attention now turns to the sporting competitions, where Team Nigeria will be aiming to make a strong impression in its quest for medals.
