Worker Dies After Fall From 13-Storey Akwa Ibom Construction Site

Construction Site Tragedy Raises Fresh Questions About Workplace Safety
Fatal Fall Shocks Workers at Ibom Tropicana Project
A tragic workplace accident has cast a shadow over one of Akwa Ibom State’s major construction projects following the death of a contract worker who reportedly fell from the top floor of a 13-storey building under construction at the Ibom Tropicana Hotel site in Uyo.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, left fellow workers and residents in shock, while raising renewed concerns about safety standards and risk management practices at large-scale construction sites.
According to accounts from workers at the project, the deceased was employed as a fire sprinkler fitter with Ratcom Construction Company. His identity had not been officially disclosed as of the time of reporting.
Routine Assignment Ends in Disaster
Sources familiar with the incident said the worker had begun his day carrying out routine duties on the ground floor, where he reportedly measured sections of work assigned to members of his team.
After completing the assignment, he was said to have proceeded to the upper levels of the building.
What happened next remains unclear.
Witnesses said the worker later fell from the top floor of the structure, suffering fatal injuries on impact.
A source at the site disclosed that the victim died instantly and was subsequently evacuated to a morgue in Uyo.
Eyewitnesses Describe Harrowing Scene
Several workers who spoke about the incident described moments of confusion and horror following the fall.
One worker said he was fetching water nearby when he suddenly heard a loud impact.
According to him, he turned toward the direction of the sound and discovered a man lying motionless on the ground with severe head injuries.
Another worker explained that he had been carrying out duties outside the building when he noticed unusual commotion among colleagues.
When he arrived at the scene, he found the victim with multiple fractures and extensive injuries resulting from the fall.
The worker said he could not explain why the deceased had gone to the uppermost floor shortly after completing his assignment below.
Calls for Investigation
The incident has triggered calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Construction sites, particularly high-rise projects, are considered among the most hazardous work environments, requiring strict adherence to safety regulations, protective equipment protocols and supervision standards.
Labour advocates have repeatedly emphasized the importance of fall-prevention systems, safety harnesses and regular risk assessments to reduce fatalities associated with construction activities.
Police Yet to Receive Full Briefing
When contacted, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Azare, said he had not yet received a detailed briefing on the incident.
He, however, assured that the matter would be investigated to determine the circumstances that led to the worker’s death.
As authorities begin inquiries, colleagues of the deceased continue to mourn a life lost in what was expected to be an ordinary day at work.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced daily by construction workers and the critical need for rigorous safety compliance across Nigeria’s growing building sector.
