Team Nigeria Begins Africa Aquatics Championships On High Note

TEAM Nigeria has made an impressive start at the 17th Africa Aquatics Championships in Oran, recording podium finishes and strong performances across several events as the competition gathers momentum.
The Nigeria Aquatics Federation expressed satisfaction with the team’s spirited showing, describing the athletes’ performances as evidence of steady growth and increasing competitiveness in African aquatics.
Nigeria opened its medal account on the opening day of the championships through Collins Ebinga, who claimed a bronze medal in the men’s 100m butterfly event.
Ebinga also recorded a new personal best time of 50.68 seconds, underlining his growing reputation on the continental swimming stage.
Another Nigerian athlete, India Kate Brown, added to the country’s medal tally by securing a bronze medal in her event, further strengthening Team Nigeria’s promising start to the tournament.
Strong Presence in Finals
On the second day of competition, Nigerian athletes continued to impress during the qualification rounds.
Collins Ebinga progressed to the final of the 50m butterfly event, while Dorcas Oka qualified for the women’s 100m breaststroke final.
Although Ebinga narrowly missed another podium finish after placing fourth in the 50m butterfly final behind competitors from Egypt and South Africa, his performance further demonstrated Nigeria’s growing strength in the pool.
Dorcas Oka also finished outside the medal positions in the 100m breaststroke final despite a determined effort.
Federation Praises Athletes
In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Unit, the Nigeria Aquatics Federation commended the athletes for their resilience, discipline and commitment throughout the competition.
The federation noted that the combination of medal finishes, personal records and final appearances reflects a positive trajectory for Nigerian aquatics on the continent.
Team Nigeria is expected to continue competing in several events as the championships progress, with officials optimistic about further medal prospects before the conclusion of the tournament.
