Shortly after Spain defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the World Cup final, the Super Eagles posted a brief but symbolic message on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, applauding the new world champions and signalling Nigeria’s ambition to end its recent absence from the global showpiece.

Though concise, the message quickly resonated with football fans, reflecting renewed optimism about Nigeria’s long-term plans after successive World Cup qualification disappointments.
Ending an Eight-Year World Cup Drought
Nigeria failed to qualify for the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup despite Africa receiving nine automatic qualification slots and an additional intercontinental playoff place under the new 48-team format.
The Super Eagles’ hopes of reaching the tournament ended in heartbreaking fashion after a playoff defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rabat, Morocco. Following a 1-1 draw after extra time, Nigeria lost 4-3 on penalties, extending the country’s World Cup absence to two consecutive editions after also missing Qatar 2022.
