Monarch Convenes Emergency Security Meeting
THE Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, has reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the Delta State capital following recent reports of armed robbery and kidnapping within the city and surrounding communities.
The monarch made the declaration during an emergency security meeting held at his palace, where he met with the leadership of the Oshimili South Tricycle Monitoring Taskforce to review the security situation and explore measures aimed at strengthening community vigilance.
Expressing concern over the recent incidents, the traditional ruler stressed that preserving peace and security requires collective action from all segments of society.
Community Vigilance Identified as Key Strategy
Addressing members of the taskforce, the Asagba emphasized the need for improved monitoring of commercial tricycle operations, noting that transportation networks often play a critical role in security management.
He directed the taskforce to intensify efforts at ensuring proper identification of operators and recommended the establishment of dedicated emergency communication channels to enable residents promptly report suspicious movements and activities.
According to him, rapid information sharing between residents and security agencies remains one of the most effective tools for crime prevention.
New Measures Proposed for Tricycle Operations
The monarch also called for stricter oversight of tricycle operators, particularly those operating late into the night.
He insisted that operators found engaging in unauthorized activities beyond approved hours should face sanctions regardless of ownership interests.
As part of the proposed measures, the taskforce was instructed to develop a monitoring framework capable of tracking operators from the beginning of daily activities until the official closing time of 10:00 p.m.
The initiative, he noted, is intended to reduce opportunities for criminal elements to exploit commercial transportation for unlawful activities.
Traditional Institution Partners Security Agencies
The Asagba reiterated that Asaba has built a reputation as a peaceful and welcoming city and should not allow criminal networks to undermine its stability.
He assured residents that the traditional institution would continue working closely with security agencies and government authorities to strengthen public safety and maintain order.
While commending the efforts of the Tricycle Monitoring Taskforce, he urged members to remain proactive in addressing emerging threats.
Stakeholders Raise Additional Security Concerns
During the meeting, community leaders highlighted several issues requiring urgent attention.
Chief Albert Ojeih expressed concern over the growing presence of underage tricycle operators in parts of the city, particularly around Cable Point and Jarrett, warning that the trend could create additional security vulnerabilities.
Similarly, Ogbueshi Uche Nwajei advocated the introduction of toll-free emergency lines to facilitate quicker responses to distress calls and aid the identification of operators linked to criminal activities.
Renewed Commitment to Public Safety
In response, executives of the Tricycle Monitoring Taskforce pledged their support for ongoing security initiatives and promised greater cooperation with law enforcement agencies.
The meeting ended with a collective commitment by stakeholders to strengthen community-based security mechanisms and encourage greater vigilance among residents as part of efforts to preserve peace and development across Asaba Kingdom.
