Scrapping Sports Commission May Stall Progress, SWAN Warns

SWAN Reacts to Policy Shift
THE Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State chapter, has expressed concern over the decision to scrap the Anambra Sports Development Commission and revert sports administration to the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports.
The association made its position known in Awka following the submission of commissioner nominees by Governor Chukwuma Soludo to the State House of Assembly for screening.
Fears Over Impact on Sports Growth
SWAN described the move as unexpected, noting that the commission, established in 2018, was expected to be strengthened rather than dissolved.
According to the body, sports administration through a ministry structure could limit growth, especially at a time when the sector is increasingly being treated as a full-fledged industry across Nigeria.
The association warned that reducing sports to a department within a ministry may slow development and weaken institutional focus.
Call for Support and Investment
Despite its concerns, SWAN expressed confidence in Patrick Aghamba, the commissioner nominee, citing his experience and previous service in government.
The association urged the state government to provide adequate funding, infrastructure, and policy support to sustain sports development, emphasizing grassroots programmes, school sports, and high-performance systems.
SWAN also pledged its readiness to collaborate with the government in promoting sports policies and programmes in the state.
