Toddler Rescued as Police Foil Alleged Trafficking Attempt in Warri
Suspicious movement sparks alarm in busy market
PANIC erupted at Igbudu Market in Warri, Delta State, after residents allegedly discovered a toddler hidden inside a sack being carried by a suspected child trafficker.
The incident occurred on Sunday 10 May 2026 and quickly drew the attention of traders and passersby who raised alarm over the suspicious handling of the child.
Mob action averted by swift police intervention
According to the Delta State Police Command spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, an angry crowd attempted to lynch the suspect before operatives of the Quick Response Squad (QRS) arrived at the scene.
The officers rescued both the child and the suspect, preventing further escalation of violence in the market.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Fejiro Obaduemu of Warri, was later taken into custody after receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the mob attack.
Child reunited with family after investigation
Police said preliminary investigations led to the tracing and identification of the toddler’s parents on 11 May.
The child was subsequently reunited with the family in the presence of community leaders.
Authorities also disclosed that the suspect allegedly confessed to being instructed by another individual to carry out the act, prompting further investigation into a possible trafficking network.
Police intensify crackdown on trafficking
The Delta State Police Command confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the alleged accomplice and dismantle any associated criminal syndicate.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities involving children to security agencies.
