Over 1,300 Officers Redeployed After Effurun Shooting Outcry

Police Leadership Responds to Alleged Extrajudicial Killing
THE Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the transfer of over 1,300 officers from the Delta State Police Command following a controversial alleged extrajudicial killing that has sparked widespread public outrage.
The directive comes after the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man in Effurun, Delta State—an incident that quickly gained national attention after video footage circulated online.
Incident Sparks National Condemnation
According to reports, the victim was restrained before being shot at close range by a police officer, raising serious concerns over violations of operational procedures and human rights standards.
The footage triggered strong reactions from citizens and advocacy groups, amplifying calls for accountability and reform within the policing system.
Disciplinary Measures and Internal Reforms
In response, police authorities reportedly arrested the officer involved and transferred the case to the Force Headquarters for further disciplinary action.
Beyond individual accountability, the IGP ordered a sweeping redeployment of officers linked to the Delta Command, a move widely interpreted as an institutional response aimed at restoring discipline and public confidence.
Calls for Accountability and Reform Intensify
The Nigeria Police leadership reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, warning that officers found guilty of unlawful actions would face strict legal consequences.
Meanwhile, civil society organisations and members of the public continue to demand broader reforms to address recurring cases of police brutality and ensure justice for victims.
