Nigeria, China Play Goalless As Falconets Face Must-Improve Final Group Match

Falconets Held to Goalless Draw
NIGERIA’S Falconets were held to a 0-0 draw by China in their second Group F match at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on Thursday.
The encounter at Arena Sosnowiec produced several chances for both teams, but neither side found the breakthrough.
The result left Nigeria third in Group F with one point after two matches.
Nigeria Starts Brightly
Coach Moses Aduku’s team began the game with attacking intent.
Janet Akekoromowei created Nigeria’s first clear opportunity in the 17th minute as the Falconets searched for an early advantage.
Nigeria gradually grew into the contest. Kafayat Mafisere won a corner in the 33rd minute, while Akekoromowei threatened again in the 38th minute and during first-half stoppage time.
China also created opportunities before the interval.
Huang Jiaxin, Zhou Xinyi and Song Lijuan tested the Nigerian defence, while Xue Sifan delivered two dangerous corners.
Goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma remained alert, however, and helped Nigeria preserve a clean sheet as the first half ended goalless.
China Increases Pressure
China made an attacking change at the start of the second half, bringing on Chen Ruilin for Xiao Yafei.
The substitute’s introduction gave China additional attacking momentum.
Chen, Xue and Huang all attempted to break the deadlock.
Nigeria responded with its own attacking surge.
Precious Oscar came close in the 54th minute, while Mafisere had efforts in the 56th and 60th minutes. Queen Joseph also went close two minutes earlier.
VAR Denies Nigeria Late Opportunity
The Falconets appeared to have a major chance to take control in the 74th minute when the referee awarded them a penalty.
The decision, however, was overturned following a VAR review.
The reversal proved significant as Nigeria failed to find another clear route to goal.
Both teams continued to push forward during the closing stages, but neither could produce the decisive finish.
The final whistle confirmed a 0-0 draw.
Nigeria Faces Crucial Final Group Match
The result leaves Spain firmly in control of Group F with six points and a 13-goal difference.
China occupy second place with four points and a plus-five goal difference.
Nigeria are third with one point and a minus-two goal difference, while New Caledonia sit bottom with a minus-16 goal difference.
The Falconets will face New Caledonia in their final group match on Sunday in Łódź.
The match, scheduled for 2 p.m., will be crucial to Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Nigeria entered the tournament in a group containing Spain, China and New Caledonia.
Title Still Eludes the Falconets
Nigeria have twice reached the final of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
The Falconets finished runners-up in 2010 and again in 2014, but they are still searching for their first title.
The 2026 tournament began on 5th September and will conclude in Poland on 27 September.
For Aduku’s side, attention now turns to New Caledonia, with qualification likely to depend on the outcome of that final group fixture and the wider Group F standings.
