New Defence Working Groups Target Terror Threats Across Nigeria

Strategic Security Partnership Renewed
NIGERIA and the United States have launched new Defence Institutional Technical Working Groups (DITWGs) under the 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, in a renewed push to strengthen military collaboration as insecurity worsens across the country.
The initiative, announced by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), comes amid intensified attacks by insurgent groups and growing concerns over the effectiveness of ongoing counterterrorism operations.
US Military Support and Surveillance Role
The partnership builds on expanded US support to Nigeria’s security operations, including the reported deployment of around 200 troops and MQ-9 surveillance drones operating from Bauchi State.
According to defence officials, the deployment is strictly for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and training purposes, with US personnel serving in advisory roles rather than engaging in combat operations.
Despite this support, authorities have faced public scrutiny over the presence of foreign military assets in domestic security operations.
Escalating Security Challenges
Nigeria continues to face worsening insecurity, particularly in the North-east, where Boko Haram and ISWAP have intensified attacks on both military targets and civilian communities.
Recent assaults and suicide bombings have raised fresh concerns about the resilience and adaptability of extremist networks, despite increased military presence and international support.
Focus of the New Working Groups
At the inauguration of the DITWGs, US delegation leader Cate Dave said the groups would focus on strengthening institutional capacity and improving strategic planning to deny terrorists operational space.
He emphasised that long-term success in counterterrorism requires strong defence systems and sustained institutional reforms, rather than reliance on battlefield victories alone.
Nigeria’s Defence Position
Representing Nigeria, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa said the collaboration would enhance the operational capability of the Armed Forces and improve response to emerging security threats nationwide.
Officials from both countries stressed the need for accountability, practical outcomes, and sustained cooperation to improve regional stability and security effectiveness.
