A Quarter-Century of Connecting Nigerians
MTN Nigeria is marking 25 years of operations in the country with a celebration of its contribution to telecommunications and digital connectivity.
The company announced the milestone through its verified X account under the campaign theme, “We’ve Come A Long Way.”
The anniversary message highlighted the millions of interactions and personal stories that have taken place through the network over the past quarter-century.
MTN also released a commemorative video featuring a city at night and a glowing road forming the number 25.
The celebration comes 25 years after the telecommunications company began commercial operations in Nigeria in 2001.
From Mobile Phones to Digital Connectivity
MTN’s journey has coincided with the transformation of Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape.
Mobile communication has evolved from a relatively limited service into an essential part of everyday life for households, businesses and institutions.
Over the years, telecommunications networks have become increasingly important for banking, commerce, education, entertainment and access to digital services.
MTN said its anniversary campaign was designed to reflect this journey and the experiences of Nigerians who have used its network.
The milestone also comes at a time when the telecommunications industry remains central to Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.
Fake Anniversary Offers Surface Online
As MTN celebrates its 25th anniversary, however, the company has warned subscribers about fraudulent online offers falsely claiming to be part of the celebration.
MTN issued the warning through its support account on X after fake posts and links offering a purported 25GB anniversary giveaway began circulating online.
The company urged subscribers to be cautious and avoid clicking on unauthorised links.
It also warned customers against providing personal information or making payments on platforms claiming to offer the anniversary data bundle.
Where the Genuine Offer Can Be Accessed
MTN said the legitimate 25GB anniversary offer is available only through its authorised channels.
Eligible subscribers can access the offer through the MyMTN NG App or the MTN eShop.
The company said customers using the MyMTN App should log in and select “Redeem Now” from the anniversary banner.
Subscribers can also visit the MTN eShop and follow the instructions provided if they qualify for the promotion.
MTN said eligible customers could also use a link contained in an SMS notification sent to them about the offer.
Customers Told to Verify Before Clicking
The warning highlights a growing risk that often accompanies major corporate promotions.
Fraudsters can exploit the popularity of a recognised brand and use attractive giveaways to lure customers to unauthorised websites or links.
MTN therefore advised subscribers to rely only on its official communication channels when seeking information about the anniversary promotion.
Customers were specifically warned not to share sensitive personal information or make payments on platforms claiming to provide the free data.
Celebration Meets Consumer Protection
MTN’s 25th anniversary therefore comes with two contrasting developments.
The company is celebrating a quarter-century of telecommunications service and the role its network has played in connecting Nigerians.
At the same time, it is having to protect customers from fraudulent actors attempting to exploit the anniversary for personal gain.
The company said the genuine 25GB offer would remain available until the stated expiry time and advised eligible customers to redeem it before the deadline.
As MTN looks back on 25 years of connectivity, the episode also underscores a challenge that increasingly accompanies Nigeria’s digital economy: the need for consumers to distinguish legitimate online services from fraudulent imitations.
