Effurun Killing: Police Sack Officers, Move To Prosecute Over Rights Violations

Force Headquarters Responds to Public Outrage
IN a move aimed at reinforcing accountability, the Nigeria Police Force has dismissed officers linked to the killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision comes after internal investigations and disciplinary hearings ordered by Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, following widespread outrage over the incident.
Findings Reveal Breach of Firearms Protocol
The Force Disciplinary Committee determined that ASP Nuhu Usman acted in violation of established policing standards, particularly Force Order 237.
According to spokesperson Anthony Okon Placid, the officer’s actions were inconsistent with professional conduct and constituted a direct breach of the mandate to safeguard lives.
The committee described the incident as a clear case of misconduct warranting severe sanctions.
Legal Process Set in Motion
The Inspector-General has approved the dismissal of all officers found culpable, with the recommendation submitted to the Police Service Commission for final ratification.
Authorities confirmed that the officers will face criminal prosecution, signalling a shift from internal discipline to judicial accountability.
Renewed Commitment to Accountability
The police leadership reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for extra-judicial actions, stressing that misuse of authority will not be condoned.
Officials emphasised that enforcing discipline within the ranks is essential to restoring public confidence in policing institutions.
Call for Calm and Justice Assurance
While extending condolences to the victim’s family, the police urged citizens to remain peaceful and allow due process to take its course.
The Force assured Nigerians that the case would be pursued transparently, with a commitment to ensuring that justice is both done and seen to be done.
