D’Tigers Name Squad For Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria Unveils Squad for Angola Test
D’TIGERS have announced their 12-man roster for the upcoming window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers, as Nigeria intensifies preparations for a decisive series of matches in Luanda, Angola.
The tournament, which begins on 2nd July, represents a critical opportunity for the Nigerian side to improve its standing in Group C, where it currently trails Guinea and Tunisia.
Leading the team for the first time is newly appointed head coach David Fizdale, whose extensive NBA coaching experience has generated fresh optimism within Nigerian basketball circles.
Returning Core Strengthens Squad
Fizdale’s first squad includes the welcome return of several familiar faces who have previously played key roles for the national team.
Among them is forward Chimezie Metu, whose professional experience in the NBA is expected to provide a significant lift. Guards Ike Iroegbu and Uche Iroegbu also return, bringing additional quality, versatility and leadership to the backcourt.
Their return is expected to improve Nigeria’s competitiveness as the team faces a demanding qualification schedule.
Eyes on Qatar and Los Angeles
The African qualifiers are pivotal to Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.
A strong outing in Angola would not only boost the team’s chances of advancing in the qualification race but also provide momentum as the programme builds towards future international competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
With a new technical direction, experienced reinforcements and qualification aspirations at stake, D’Tigers will be aiming to make a strong statement when action begins in Angola.
