Investigators Uncover Alleged Blueprint for Regime Change
FRESH details have emerged from confidential investigative documents outlining what authorities describe as the political agenda and operational thinking behind the alleged failed coup plot against the administration of President Bola Tinubu. The disclosures, contained in prosecution documents reviewed by investigators, provide insight into the alleged objectives, planning methods and motivations attributed to key suspects now facing trial.
According to the documents, the alleged conspirators had begun developing policy proposals they intended to implement if they succeeded in taking power. Among the priorities listed were a review of the Federal Government’s fuel subsidy removal policy, an assessment of salaries and welfare packages for members of the armed forces and other security agencies, and the establishment of a committee to recommend national honours for military personnel who died in active service.
Investigators said the proposed agenda appeared designed to address issues that have generated public debate in recent years, particularly the economic impact of fuel subsidy removal and long-standing concerns over the welfare of military personnel.
Handwritten Notes Become Key Evidence
Military investigators said one of the principal exhibits recovered during the investigation was a handwritten notebook allegedly belonging to a serving Nigerian Army colonel identified as Mohammed Ma’aji, whom prosecutors describe as a central figure in the alleged conspiracy.
According to the investigation, the notebook was recovered during a search of his residence and later subjected to forensic examination by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Investigators said the findings were forwarded to the Defence Headquarters as part of the evidence assembled for prosecution.
Authorities alleged that the notebook contained policy ideas, personal reflections and motivational quotations that prosecutors believe illustrate the suspect’s state of mind during the planning period.
Court records indicate that the defendant acknowledged writing the notes during interrogation. However, the allegations remain before the courts and have not been established through judicial proceedings.
Welfare Concerns Featured Prominently
The investigative documents indicate that dissatisfaction with military welfare featured prominently in the alleged discussions.
According to the prosecution’s case, the suspect argued that many officers and soldiers were dissatisfied with their conditions of service, salaries and allowances. Investigators said those concerns formed part of the narrative allegedly used to justify support for the proposed change in government.
For years, serving and retired military personnel have publicly advocated improved welfare, better accommodation, enhanced allowances and stronger support for families of personnel killed in action. Although the Federal Government has introduced welfare reforms and periodic adjustments, many stakeholders have continued to argue that existing measures have not fully addressed the challenges facing security personnel.
Investigators believe the proposed review of military remuneration and recognition for fallen service members formed part of an effort to present the alleged agenda as one focused on institutional reform.
Motivational Quotations & Planning Strategy
Beyond policy proposals, investigators said the notebook also contained numerous motivational quotations attributed to various public figures and authors.
According to the investigation, prosecutors believe the collection reflected the mindset of the alleged plot’s principal organiser. The writings reportedly included quotations about courage, perseverance, leadership and decision-making.
Investigators stressed that the quotations themselves do not constitute criminal conduct but were included among the materials recovered during the investigation because they were allegedly compiled alongside operational notes.
Secret Codes & Operational Planning
The investigation further revealed that the alleged conspirators adopted coded language to conceal their communications.
According to earlier court filings, agricultural expressions allegedly replaced references to operational activities. Terms relating to farming, fertilisers, harvests and technical partners were reportedly assigned coded meanings intended to disguise conversations from outsiders.
Investigators also alleged that discussions took place regarding possible timelines for carrying out the operation. However, prosecution documents indicate that no final date had been agreed before security agencies disrupted the alleged plot.
Trials Continue Before Military & Civil Courts
The alleged conspiracy has resulted in one of Nigeria’s most extensive military-related criminal investigations in recent years.
More than 40 suspects, including serving military personnel, retired officers, police officers and civilians, have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
Thirty-six serving military personnel are currently facing trial before a General Court Martial in Abuja, while six other defendants are standing trial before the Federal High Court on multiple criminal charges.
All defendants have pleaded not guilty. They have challenged the admissibility of their extra-judicial statements and other prosecution exhibits, arguing that the evidence was obtained in violation of legal safeguards. The prosecution has urged the courts to admit the materials. The allegations remain subject to judicial determination, and no court has convicted any of the accused persons.
