Investigative Series Promises Fresh Insight Into Nigeria’s Most High-Profile Alleged Coup Plot in Decades

PREMIUM TIMES has announced the release of an extensive investigative series detailing what it describes as previously undisclosed aspects of the alleged 2025 coup plot against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, promising readers an unprecedented look into one of Nigeria’s most sensitive national security cases in recent history.

According to the newspaper, the investigation is based on thousands of confidential documents obtained from official records, including witness statements, investigative reports and security files compiled by multiple agencies involved in the probe.

The publication said the materials provide a detailed account of how investigators believe the alleged conspiracy was conceived, organised and executed before it was uncovered by security authorities.

Alleged Plot Triggered National Security Concerns

The alleged conspiracy first came to public attention in September 2025, when reports emerged that security agencies had foiled an attempt to overthrow the Tinubu administration.

Although government officials initially sought to minimise public concern over the reports, the matter has since evolved into one of the country’s most significant national security prosecutions, with serving and retired military officers, a police officer and several civilians currently facing criminal proceedings in both civilian courts and military tribunals.

The alleged plot also attracted national attention following reports that security concerns contributed to the scaling down of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations on 1st October 2025.

Thousands of Confidential Documents Examined

According to PREMIUM TIMES, its investigation draws from thousands of pages of confidential records assembled by security agencies over several months.

The documents reportedly include intelligence reports, interview transcripts, financial records, operational assessments and witness testimonies that investigators relied upon in building criminal cases against the suspects.

The newspaper said the records offer detailed accounts of alleged recruitment efforts, fundraising activities, acquisition of weapons, logistics planning, reconnaissance missions and internal communications among individuals under investigation.

It added that the investigation seeks to present a broader understanding of the alleged conspiracy beyond what has previously appeared in public reports.

Key Individuals & Alleged Operational Network

Among those identified by investigators is Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji of the Defence Space Administration, who is described in the investigative records as one of the alleged principal coordinators of the conspiracy.

The documents reportedly identify dozens of serving and retired military personnel, politicians, businessmen, Islamic clerics, civilians and a police officer whose activities came under scrutiny during the investigation.

Security agencies also alleged that the network extended across military formations, civilian institutions and locations linked to the Presidency, with various individuals allegedly assigned responsibilities relating to logistics, intelligence gathering, recruitment, financing and propaganda.

The allegations remain before the courts, and those standing trial are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by competent judicial authorities.

Alleged Assassination Plans and Ongoing Prosecution

Investigators further alleged that the conspiracy involved plans to violently remove the elected government and install a replacement administration.

Among those reportedly identified as intended targets were President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, service chiefs and commanders of strategic military formations.

The Federal Government has since arraigned six defendants before the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges including treason, terrorism and money laundering, while 36 serving military personnel are facing separate proceedings before a General Court Martial.

The allegations remain subject to judicial determination.
