Government Launches Urgent Response
AKWA Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has initiated a comprehensive review of the state’s drainage master plan following flash floods that affected several parts of Uyo metropolis.
During an inspection of impacted communities, the governor announced a one-week deadline for relevant ministries, agencies, consultants and contractors to produce an action plan that will provide immediate relief while laying the foundation for long-term flood prevention.
He described the exercise as essential to protecting communities from recurring flooding and improving urban resilience.
Demolition of Obstructing Buildings Considered
Governor Eno said investigations showed that numerous structures had encroached on natural waterways, restricting stormwater movement and increasing flood risks.
He stated that any building found to be obstructing designated drainage channels would be removed after due process, including engagement with affected property owners, revocation of Certificates of Occupancy where necessary and payment of appropriate compensation.
According to the governor, restoring natural water channels is critical to preventing future flooding across the capital city.
Call for Collective Responsibility
The governor urged residents to complement government efforts by maintaining clean surroundings and ensuring drainage systems remain free of refuse.
He emphasised that environmental discipline is just as important as infrastructure development in achieving effective flood control.
Governor Eno noted that while climate conditions contribute to flooding, human activities such as indiscriminate waste disposal and illegal construction often worsen the problem.
Emergency Intervention Praised
Governor Eno commended the Deputy Governor-led Emergency Response Team and contractors who responded swiftly by clearing blocked drains, removing debris and restoring access to affected communities.
Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi praised the governor’s prompt intervention, describing it as another demonstration of his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
Residents also welcomed the government’s response, expressing optimism that the planned drainage overhaul would provide a lasting solution to persistent flooding challenges.
The inspection covered Ikot Ekpene Road, Nkemba Trough Road, Osongama Estate Extension and Edet Akpan Avenue, all among the areas affected by recent flash floods.
