A delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) led by Mr. Axel Schimmelpfennig, Assistant Director of its African Department, met with Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, in Abuja to discuss the country’s ongoing reforms and the 2026–2030 National Development Plan.
The visit was part of the IMF’s mission to assess Nigeria’s fiscal priorities and medium-term economic outlook ahead of its next country report. Schimmelpfennig praised Nigeria’s reform drive and policy consistency, noting that the country’s approach reflects institutional maturity even in pre-election periods.
Bagudu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, inclusive growth, and coordinated national planning, aligning reforms with President Bola Tinubu’s goal of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030.
He highlighted the Renewed Hope Ward-Based Development Plan and the forthcoming 2026–2030 National Development Plan as key tools for bottom-up, data-driven growth, while commending the IMF’s continued technical support for Nigeria’s reform agenda.
