NIGERIA has recorded an 81 percent drop in terror-related deaths since 2015, the Presidency announced on Sunday, citing strengthened security operations and closer collaboration with affected communities.
In a statement on its official X handle, the Presidency said over 13,000 terrorists were neutralised in the past year, while more than 124,000 fighters and their families have surrendered to authorities. It added that about 2.1 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their communities as peace gradually returns to formerly volatile areas.
The statement also highlighted the establishment of a Resettlement Scheme for Persons Impacted by Conflict, designed to rebuild war-torn communities and reintegrate displaced persons.
“Since 2023, the Federal Government, through enhanced inter-agency cooperation, has vigorously pursued, arrested, eliminated, or successfully convicted terrorists and insurgents, including those behind major attacks on Nigerian soil,” the statement read.
It noted that 124 terrorists and insurgents have been convicted since 2024, with several others — including members of the Ansaru leadership and suspects in the Owo Church bombing and Benue reprisal attacks — currently facing trial.
The Presidency further outlined ongoing efforts such as joint security task forces, enhanced border patrols, compensation for victims, and intelligence sharing with regional and global partners to consolidate recent gains and ensure lasting peace.
