Falconets Roar Back With 10-1 Win To Reach Knockout Stage

NIGERIA’S Falconets stormed into the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026 after crushing New Caledonia 10-1 on Sunday.
The emphatic victory revived Nigeria’s campaign after a difficult start to the tournament.
The Falconets had lost 2-0 to Spain before playing out a goalless draw with China. As a result, they entered their final Group F match needing a big win to strengthen their qualification hopes.
They delivered in spectacular fashion.
Nigeria dominated New Caledonia from the start. The Falconets maintained relentless pressure and finished their chances with far greater efficiency than they had shown in their opening two matches.
The 10-goal haul also gave Nigeria a major boost in goal difference. That proved crucial as the team secured its place in the knockout stage.
New Caledonia, meanwhile, endured a difficult debut at the tournament. The first-time participants finished the group stage without a point after suffering three consecutive defeats.
For Nigeria, the result represented a dramatic turnaround.
The Falconets had struggled to score in their first two matches despite creating opportunities. Against New Caledonia, however, they combined urgency, attacking movement and clinical finishing.
Spain topped Group F after beating China 3-1 in the other final group match. Nigeria and China also advanced to the Round of 16.
Attention now shifts to the knockout stage, where Nigeria will face a tougher test.
The Falconets’ opponent, venue and kick-off time will emerge after the remaining group matches determine the final standings and the best third-placed teams.
The 24-team tournament sends the top two teams from each of the six groups into the knockout phase, alongside the four best third-placed teams.
Nigeria must now build on its attacking performance while fixing the weaknesses exposed in the opening matches.
After a frustrating start, the Falconets have given themselves another opportunity to fight for the title.
