Germany, Nigeria Launch First Film Week to Deepen Cultural Collaboration
Four German Cities to Host Landmark Film Festival
GERMANY and Nigeria are set to strengthen their cultural and creative partnership with the inaugural Germany-Nigeria Film Week 2026, scheduled to take place from 1st to 10th October across the German cities of Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen and Hannover.
The 10-day event is expected to serve as a major platform for cultural diplomacy, cinematic exchange and collaboration between the film industries of both countries.
According to a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Emmanuel Eyaba, the festival is being jointly organised by Germany’s SONNENKIND Film e.V. and Nigeria’s Pan-African Film Development Foundation.
Expanding Opportunities for Filmmakers
The organisers said the initiative is designed to strengthen professional ties between Nigerian and German filmmakers while creating new opportunities for investment, co-productions and international partnerships.
The event is expected to attract directors, producers, filmmakers, studio executives, investors, distributors, government officials and cultural ambassadors from Africa and Europe.
By bringing together industry stakeholders from both continents, the organisers hope to create lasting partnerships that will expand the global reach of Nigerian cinema while encouraging knowledge exchange with Germany’s advanced film production sector.
Programme Features Screenings, Masterclasses & Business Sessions
The festival programme will feature exclusive screenings of Nigerian and African films alongside a range of professional development activities.
Participants will take part in masterclasses focusing on international co-production, film financing and distribution, while guided studio tours will provide insights into Germany’s film production infrastructure.
Business-to-Business (B2B) pitching sessions have also been scheduled to connect filmmakers and creative entrepreneurs with potential investors and financiers.
Festival to Conclude with Gala & Awards
Activities will commence in Berlin on 1st October before moving to Hamburg and Bremen, with the festival concluding in Hannover on 10th October.
The closing ceremony will feature a Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony celebrating outstanding artistic achievements and recognising successful cross-cultural collaborations.
Organisers described the event as a significant milestone that will give Nigerian filmmakers structured access to European markets while introducing wider European audiences to the richness, diversity and growing influence of African cinema.
