Jubilation In Issele-Azagba As Court Ends 14-Year Akpoma Land Dispute

Court Ruling Ends 14-Year Legal Battle Over Akpoma Land as Issele-Azagba Community Celebrates Victory
Residents Mark Judgment with Prayers and Traditional Festivities
RESIDENTS of Akpoma Village in Issele-Azagba, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State, have celebrated a significant legal victory following the dismissal of a land ownership suit that had remained before the courts for more than 14 years.
The judgment, delivered by the High Court sitting in Akwukwu-Igbo, struck out a case filed by the Ogbeozoma Quarter of Okpanam, which sought to overturn a consent judgment entered in favour of Akpoma Quarter of Issele-Azagba in 2012.
The decision effectively brings to an end one of the state’s longest-running community land disputes, although related litigation between the neighbouring communities has also featured in other courts over the years.
To commemorate the ruling, elders, youths, landlords and other residents gathered for thanksgiving prayers, cultural dances and the ceremonial firing of 50 cannon shots.
Court Upholds Earlier Consent Judgment
The disputed matter centred on attempts to invalidate a consent judgment obtained in 2012 concerning ownership of the Akpoma land.
According to community representatives, the Ogbeozoma Quarter had repeatedly challenged the judgment through various legal proceedings over the years.
With the latest ruling, the court restored the legal position established by the earlier consent judgment, dismissing the application seeking to reopen the dispute.
Community members described the outcome as judicial confirmation of what they believe has always been their lawful ownership of the land.
Community Leaders Describe Verdict as Vindication
Speaking after the judgment, community spokesman Mr. Kanayo Nwachukwu said residents regarded the verdict as both a legal and moral victory after years of prolonged litigation.
He recalled that the dispute had consumed considerable time and resources, as repeated court actions created uncertainty over ownership of the land.
According to him, the dismissal of the case now provides legal clarity for the Akpoma community.
The celebration commenced with prayers led by the site’s manager, Mr. Chike Amaeze, before residents engaged in cultural displays to mark the occasion.
Warning Issued to Prospective Land Buyers
Community leaders also used the opportunity to caution prospective investors and land buyers.
Nwachukwu warned that individuals purchasing land from parties the community considers to lack legal title do so entirely at their own risk.
He maintained that the court’s ruling has reaffirmed the legal status of the disputed property and should guide future land transactions within the area.
Dispute Highlights Wider Boundary Challenges
The Akpoma land dispute forms part of broader boundary and land ownership disagreements involving communities in Aniocha North and Oshimili North Local Government Areas.
Such disputes have periodically attracted the attention of government authorities, security agencies and traditional institutions because of their implications for peace, property ownership and community development.
While Issele-Azagba residents say the latest judgment finally closes the chapter on the litigation, observers note that long-term peace will depend on continued respect for judicial decisions and constructive engagement between neighbouring communities.
The ruling represents another reminder of the critical role of the courts in resolving protracted land disputes through due legal process while providing certainty for communities, investors and property owners.
