Riverbank Monarchs Urged To Pursue Joint Development Agenda

Asagba Azinge Receives Ossomala Delegation In Asaba
THE Asagba Prof. Epiphany Chigbogu Azinge has called on traditional rulers and communities along the River Niger corridor to strengthen collaboration and chart a common developmental path capable of improving the lives of their people.
The monarch made the call while receiving High Chief Vincent Ndudi Ogbonnia and his entourage at the Asagba Palace in Asaba.
The visit, which took place on 24 May 2026, was facilitated by Chief Mbanefo Udeze, who also serves as Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force, Delta State Command.
The Asagba appreciated Chief Udeze for his service to the Asaba Kingdom and for fostering ties between both kingdoms through the visit.
Monarch Advocates Regional Synergy
Speaking during the engagement, Asagba Azinge commended the leadership qualities of High Chief Ogbonnia, describing him as a man of integrity who fulfilled a long-standing promise made to the people of Idumuojei village in Umuezei quarters, Asaba.
The monarch reaffirmed the historical and ancestral ties between Asaba and Ossomala Kingdoms, noting that both communities share Igala roots.
According to him, the “Nwanne Di Na Mba” philosophy should extend beyond the two kingdoms to include all communities situated along the River Niger basin.
He stressed the importance of collective action among riverbank kingdoms, insisting that united voices would better advance regional interests and development priorities.
Focus Placed On River Niger Development
The Asagba outlined several strategic areas where cooperation among the kingdoms could deliver economic and social benefits to their people.
Among the priorities he identified were the dredging of the River Niger to improve the viability of the Onitsha Port, the development of the blue economy, and the enhancement of water transportation systems to strengthen trade and connectivity.
“Asaba and Ossomala, and indeed all riverbank kingdoms, stand to create wealth and lift our people out of poverty if we take the aforementioned seriously,” the monarch stated.
He urged stakeholders to move beyond discussions and begin implementing practical steps capable of transforming the region.
The royal father also expressed optimism about future engagements aimed at translating the vision into measurable development outcomes.
Brotherhood Symbolised Through Cultural Exchange
As part of the visit, Chief Barr. Philips Ejike Nwokolo presented a ceremonial Akwa Ocha attire to the Odobor of Ossomala on behalf of the Asagba and the Asaba community as a symbol of brotherhood and unity between both kingdoms.
Earlier, High Chief Ogbonnia described the Asagba as a role model and first-class traditional ruler, thanking him for granting the delegation audience despite the short notice.
He recalled the longstanding historical ties between Asaba and Ossomala, particularly with the people of Idumuojei village, and noted that the visit was partly to fulfil a promise he made before ascending the throne as Odobor of Ossomala Kingdom.
The monarch also sought royal guidance and blessings from the Asagba, drawing from his experience as a professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
In the same vein, His Royal High Chief Stephen Enebeli expressed appreciation for the warm reception and extended an invitation to the Asagba to visit Ossomala Kingdom for further engagements.
