Sheriff Oborevwori Wins Praise As Widows Welfare Payments Continue Across Delta

Beneficiaries commend government support as verification exercise and health insurance enrolment begin statewide.
BENEFICIARIES of the Delta State Widows Welfare Scheme have expressed appreciation to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori following the disbursement of April 2026 stipends across the state’s 25 local government areas.
The widows, who confirmed receipt of their payments, described the initiative as a vital support system helping them cope with prevailing economic challenges and improve their daily living conditions.
Speaking in Asaba, the Coordinator of the scheme, Isioma Okonta, commended the governor for sustaining social investment programmes targeted at vulnerable groups.
Statewide Verification Exercise Begins
Okonta disclosed that the Delta State Social Investment Office would commence a routine verification and update of the beneficiaries’ register beginning 10 May 2026.
According to him, the exercise will take place across all 25 local government areas to ensure that the database remains accurate and reflective of current realities.
He explained that the verification would help identify beneficiaries who may have remarried or passed away, thereby strengthening transparency and accountability in the programme’s implementation.
Health Insurance Boost for Beneficiaries
In addition to the verification process, officials of the Delta State Contributory Health Scheme will be present during the exercise to facilitate free registration of widows into the state’s health insurance programme.
Okonta noted that this initiative would enable beneficiaries to access medical care at accredited health facilities closest to them without financial burden.
He described the integration of healthcare support into the welfare scheme as a major step towards improving the overall wellbeing of widows in the state.
Sustaining Social Support Initiatives
The coordinator also revealed that prayer sessions regularly organised by beneficiaries for the governor, his family and the peace and development of Delta State would continue across the local government areas.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Social Investment Office to sustaining the programme and ensuring that it remains impactful for widows and other vulnerable groups.
Observers say the scheme reflects the state government’s broader strategy of combining financial support with social services to improve the quality of life for disadvantaged populations.
