Idem Calls For Amendment Of FRSC Act To Reduce Traffic Crashes

Lawmaker Seeks Amendment to Strengthen Road Safety Framework
THE Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, Rep. Unyime Idem, has called for urgent amendment of the Federal Road Safety Commission Act 2007.
He made the call during plenary, urging lawmakers to strengthen the legal framework governing road traffic administration and safety management in Nigeria.
Expanding FRSC Mandate for Better Coordination
Rep. Idem proposed that the amendment should empower the Federal Road Safety Corps to take full responsibility for road traffic administration, safety management, and crash prevention across public roads.
He argued that a clearer mandate would help reduce overlapping responsibilities among agencies and improve overall efficiency in traffic regulation.
Improving Enforcement and Data Systems
According to him, the reform would enhance enforcement capacity, strengthen emergency response systems, and improve crash management mechanisms.
He also noted that a centralized traffic data and intelligence system would support better planning and decision-making in road safety operations.
Aligning with Global Standards
The lawmaker further stated that the proposed amendment would improve collaboration among stakeholders and align Nigeria’s road safety framework with international best practices.
He stressed that a more structured system would ultimately reduce road traffic accidents nationwide.
