Wakama Names Strong Squad for Global Test
NIGERIA’S reigning African champions, Nigeria women’s national basketball team, have taken the first step toward another global appearance by naming a provisional squad for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifiers in Lyon.
The 11–17 March tournament will see Nigeria battle five nations — France, Germany, South Korea, Colombia and the Philippines — in a demanding round-robin format, with only three teams advancing to the next stage.
Head coach Rena Wakama’s selection reflects a careful mix of proven performers and rising stars, underlining the team’s determination to compete at the highest level.
Veteran guards Ezinne Kalu and Sarah Ogoke headline the squad alongside Amy Okonkwo and Promise Amukamara, players whose international exposure and championship pedigree provide stability. Also included are Elizabeth Balogun, Nicole Enabosi, Victoria Macaulay and Murjanatu Musa, reinforcing the team’s depth across positions.
Young talents such as Grace Efosa, Rita Igbokwe and Wandoo Hemba add energy and versatility, offering Wakama tactical flexibility as the competition unfolds.
Road to Qualification
Nigeria begin their quest against Colombia before facing South Korea, the Philippines, tournament hosts France and Germany in quick succession.
With European heavyweights and disciplined Asian sides in the mix, D’Tigress will need sharp execution, defensive intensity and leadership to secure progression.
The Lyon qualifiers represent more than just a tournament — they are a critical proving ground for a team aiming to translate continental success into sustained global impact.
