14 Teams, One Mission: Team Delta Sets Sights On National Intermediate Games Glory

A Commanding Regional Performance
TEAM Delta has stamped its authority on the South-South Zonal Elimination of the National Intermediate Games, qualifying 14 teams for the national championship.
Delta finished first in the regional standings.
Bayelsa and Rivers came next with seven qualified teams each. Akwa Ibom and Cross River recorded three qualifications apiece, while Edo secured two.
The result gives Delta the largest representation from the zone heading into the national competition.
Talent on Display
Team Delta’s success cut across several sporting disciplines.
The state qualified in male and female basketball and beach volleyball, as well as male and female football.
It also secured places in female cricket, female handball, male hockey, male and female rugby, male volleyball, and female and mixed doubles in crossminton.
The spread across different sports points to a broad talent base rather than dependence on a single discipline.
Grassroots Investment Produces Results
The qualification comes as the Delta State Sports Commission continues to emphasise grassroots talent identification and development.
Under the leadership of its Chairman, Hon. Onoriode Joshua “Onos” Oborevwori, the commission has promoted youth sports as a pathway for producing athletes capable of competing at higher levels.
The South-South qualifiers offered another platform for young athletes to gain competitive experience.
Their performance also demonstrated the benefits of sustained preparation, tactical discipline and exposure to quality opposition.
From Qualification to Podium
However, the regional success is only the first hurdle.
Team Delta must now prepare for a tougher national championship involving qualifiers from across the country.
The focus will shift from securing qualification to winning medals and establishing Delta among the leading contingents at the national level.
The Sports Commission has pledged continued support for the athletes and coaches as preparations continue.
If the momentum from the South-South qualifiers continues, Delta will enter the National Intermediate Games with both a sizeable contingent and strong expectations.
